Who Should Participate
This
activity is intended for internal medicine physicians and other healthcare
professionals interested in the diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia (FM).
Overview
This
activity will be designed for clinicians who encounter patients with
fibromyalgia and will provide updates and offer solutions to the most
common clinical challenges surrounding fibromyalgia. Recognized experts
will facilitate the activity, which will focus on practical information
surrounding differential diagnosis, new insights regarding shared
pathophysiology with other chronic pain conditions, and step-wise
treatment plans. Presentations will highlight distinct roles each
clinician group contributes to the management of fibromyalgia and will
demonstrate clinical decision-making with case scenarios. Participants
will also benefit from a question and answer session.
Learning
Objectives
The
primary goal for the proposed initiative is to increase providers’
ability to diagnose and treat FM. At the end of this program, the
participant should
be able to
|
|
1. |
Differentiate
fibromyalgia from comorbidities and conditions with similar
symptoms, such as myofascial pain syndrome or polymyalgia rheumatica,
using
American
College
of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. |
|
2. |
Evaluate
the use of pregabalin, tricyclic compounds, dual reuptake
inhibitors, analgesics, antidepressants, and antiepileptics in the
treatment of fibromyalgia and prescribe appropriate pharmacological
treatments for fibromyalgia based on the latest clinical trial data
and practice guidelines. |
|
3. |
Apply
multidisciplinary approaches that incorporate two or more strategies
to decrease pain and improve function in fibromyalgia. |
|
4. |
Formulate
an approach to discussing the likely course of fibromyalgia with
patients and their families, including the likelihood of flare-ups
despite treatment, the need to monitor and report treatment side
effects, and the importance of long-term treatment compliance. |
